We also run Essentials, which covers English for Employment and Words for Work.

English for Employment
We also run English for Employment which is an ESOL courses lasting for 12 - 14 weeks for two hours a day, four days a week. This course focusses on work-based English and is delivered at a level that is appropriate for students to follow.

To be referred to the course the Member is assessed so that we can find out which class is best for them. The member completes something called a Fast Track at their Initial Appointment. Once this has been completed they may be invited to a 20 minute Further Assessment. We build classes of students at similar levels. We adapt our course materials depending on the ability of the class.

Courses incorporate grammar, pronunciation, comprehension and role-play to prepare students for work. Students are taught CV writing, interview techniques, letter writing and telephone techniques. Members are shown how to be pro-active in their search for work. One of our trainers, Shellyanne Graham says that "I find that if people take ownership of something, then they are much more likely to succeed".

It is also vital that students have the opportunity to further develop their social skills. Many students have little interaction with people outside of their immediate communities. ESOL classes are a good opportunity to learn about other cultures and British business culture. Debate and interaction between the students is encouraged as they will need these skills for the world of work. We teach courses in a student-centred way in order to fully explore this.

As we are an accredited City and Guilds centre, we can also administer and mark ESOL / Literacy Skills for Life exams. Not all of our students will do them but some of them choose to as they want to gain a qualification. These qualifications can often be the first for students, a real platform for entering work.

Words for Work
This is an employability course with embedded literacy. The courses run from 6 to 10 weeks covering:
•Realistic job goals
•Understanding employers
•Selling yourself
•Filling in application forms
•Building CVs
•The hidden and open job market
•Successful job search
•Interview techniques
The course is aimed at members who fall below Level 1 literacy and who may struggle with other "text heavy" courses. The overall aim to is empower members and help them access the job market with knowledge and confidence by refining their existing skills.  This is delivered in a group setting with 1-2-1 tutorials/job search. Each learner works to their own individual learning plan that outlines short and long term goals, either work related or personal. In the past it has been proved that members taking part have a better understanding of the work place. They are better equipped for their future in employment because they have spent time with the trainer and fellow members addressing their barriers to employment. The course also helps them to gain confidence. The fact that other people (the trainer/PA) are involved in their development and job search makes them feel valued and appreciated which in turn makes them more ready to enter work.

These are offered to members who wish to update qualifications or want to gain qualifications for the first time. This can start with a mock exam to bring to light any problem areas that require further work or at a basic level covering all the topics that will come up in a exam.
